Windup Radios -- Convenient, Economic and Environmentally Friendly

Wind up radios are very popular amongst environmentally conscious people looking for a unit they can use in emergency situations, as well as for everyday use. They are invaluable for campers, backpackers and those who live in areas where electrical power is sometimes unreliable.

Modern windup (or clockwork) radios have been around since their invention in 1989 by Briton, Trevor Baylis, who wanted to create an affordable self-powered device for people in the third world. They have been gaining much popularity in recent years, and have helped to spur the growth of other windup devices, such as flashlights. They incorporate a hand crank which you use to either wind a spring (which stores energy to power the radio), or drive a direct charge alternator.

Most models these days will run for approximately half an hour or more for each half a minute you wind the hand crank (this varies of course depending on the volume you are listening at).

Environmental Friendliness

Batteries contain harmful heavy metals which can end up in ground water and cause damage to the environment. As you won't need any, you won't be contributing to this problem. Although several models do contain rechargeable batteries. These days many windup radios also incorporate solar panels as another green way to power the device.

Many models now incorporate other features, such as integrated LED flashlights, clocks and alarms, and even cell phone chargers. Whether you choose one of these or simply a basic windup radio, it is a convenient way to help save money, and do a little bit for the environment at the same time.
