Australian water cooled chillers – using a chiller to improve efficiency in healthcare
Australian chiller manufacturer Summit Matsu Chilling Systems has built a new water cooled chiller for Perth Radiation Oncology Clinic for their new Linear accelerator. The chiller is designed to keep a relatively high ambient temperature of 50 degrees Celsius and allows the machine to operate without the risk of overheating and damaging the equipment or posing a risk to the patient’s health.
Providing the best care and treatment for cancer patients is a reputation that the Australian Radiation and Oncology community prides itself on. At the core of the radiation treatments that clinics offer is the linear accelerator (linac) machine which speeds particles to an extent at which they are able to pass through the body to kill cancerous cells. It is a process that requires extremely high voltage and generates an enormous amount of heat as a by product.
The process of running the linac machine means that the excess heat must be extracted in a safe and reliable manner to minimise the risks to the machine and the patient. The most common method of heat extraction is the use of a water cooled chiller. A water cooled chiller runs cool water through the system taking hot water from the condensers and vacuum pump, cooling it down and pumping it back again. In the field of oncology, having a reliable and durable chiller means that the linear accelerator machine which is used to administer treatment can be used for a longer period of time due to an efficient expulsion of excess heat. This translates into more patients being treated thanks to the ability to run the machine continuously for longer periods of time without the risk of overheating and damaging the linac.
One clinic that has benefited from the installation of a water cooled chiller to extract this excess heat is the Perth Radiation Oncology Clinic. The clinic commissioned Sydney based chiller manufacturer Summit Matsu Chilling Systems to design and build a chiller which was able to cool the linac by pumping cool water through the machine. Mr Mike Masters of Perth Radiation Oncology noted that the sensitive nature of the machine dictated that the chiller be able to maintain a constant temperature and that “a water cooled chiller was able to guarantee that a relatively high ambient temperature of 50°C could be maintained”. In addition to the ability to provide custom specifications in the design process, Mr Masters commented that the chiller created a significantly smaller environmental footprint compared to other cooling processes that were considered.
