The sailors, punk rockers and lesbians? If I had to try to choose a combination with less in common, I do not know if I could. However, one thing brings these groups together, and that is its association with the popular tattoo design, the nautical star.
Although the meaning behind the design as puzzling as why Superman wears his underwear outside his clothes, there are some common associations with it. The establishment agrees to be generally sailors (and I thought that all he got were pinups and anchors!). The meaning to them is quite obvious. The nautical star is representative of the North Star. When ships were at sea, they would use this particular star to move, because it stays in the same place. The sailors were known to be superstitious, who came through their tattoos of nautical stars who thought they would at home.
The travel time for many years in the future to 40-50's. At this time, homosexuality was not common as it is today. The nautical star has become a popular way for lesbians to show pride in their lifestyle without being explicit. Most of the time that they tattoo on the inside of your wrist. Thus, the day would play an alter ego, wearing a watch to cover the tattoo. Then at night, is reveal their true colors will show your pride out in the city. Batman sort of reverse ... except that Batman is not gay.
The association in passing that the nautical star has accelerated in recent years is the punk music scene. Although the reasoning for this is very clear, may have something to do with the "classic" style tattoo that was popular with the punk scene. It could have something to do with a tattoo artist, Sailor Jerry, which was popular among punk rockers.
Despite the wide range of partnerships, I think all together in one direction. The nautical star is a symbol of hope of finding the path. If you represent something in your life that has guided him throughout of his way, like a friend or a religion, or simply the fact that follow your heart with his life by going after their dreams, is a tattoo that can have great personal meaning.
