So much depends upon you having good woodworking kit. Of course, there are many different possibilities for the meaning behind woodworking kit. It could refer to anything from tools bundled together to sets of plans to a kit containing all the materials needed to build a particular item. Most things can be bundled into a kit. Despite this, that statement holds true; no matter which facet of woodworking kit you have in mind there is a lot depending upon it being good.

To sum up, what different sorts of woodworking kit is there? There are ‘kit' projects which bundle together the plans and materials to let you get started on a particular project. For example, you might find you could purchase a chicken coop kit that came with everything you needed to get started. Kit could also refer to tools, which are sometimes bundled up into a kit. To complicate matters further these could be either hand tools or power tools. Another use of kit may refer to an individual tool which is sold with numerous add-ons. Then of course there are kits that contain thousands upon thousands of designs. Those are intended to help you get started with whatever project you find yourself needing to tackle.

So what's in all these various kits? You might be asking. In a hand tools set you will probably find the usual suspects such as hammers, screwdrivers, chisels, planes, mallets, saws, and so forth. A hand tool kit is certainly everything you would presumably need to make anything at all, though for efficiency you really need to turn to power tools.

In a power tools kit on the other hand, you would probably find less items due to the expense. Three or four bundled power tools would seem reasonable. Such deals might offer a jigsaw, a router, a power drill, a sander and perhaps even a high-speed rotary tool.

Another meaning of kit could be referencing a set of plans and materials to build a specific item such as a chicken coop or a model boat. Such kits have big advantages as the purchaser can then get started on the project right away without having to outsource materials (much, there's usually something missing). Ideal for the impatient!

Then there are kits containing thousands of project files that give you plans and instructions for building anything you like. It has to be said that when it comes to a kit of plans, one good thing is that it only needs to be purchased once, and from then on you have a library of plans to refer to. Could be a good investment no matter what your level of commitment to woodworking – be it hobbyist or something more serious.

Given that all these meanings crop up when talking about woodworking kit, it's a wonder that carpenter's stay sane. Fortunately woodworking itself is therapeutic!

As mentioned earlier, good kit, regardless of the form it takes, is essential. The last thing a woodworker needs is for tools to break, edges to blunt, or power to fail at a critical moment. Similarly, if purchasing a kit containing plans there should be plenty of variety so that you don't find yourself having to purchase more plans in the near future. Eventually you will surely have to purchase plans, something very specialist is bound to crop up, but until then the idea is that your kit handles any topics that could crop up, foreseen or otherwise.
And of course, if kit refers to materials, then that speaks for itself and hardly needs elaborated on.

Kit then, is clearly important, so don't just buy the cheapest. Be a diligent shopper and weigh the pros and cons of each purchase. It is often said that some people know the price of everything and the cost of nothing, think about that for a moment. What that means is that cost is about more than price, and that the value of something comes from the balance of price versus the value it offers.

So if you could buy a cheap model of a particular power tool at 79.99 but there was a very high quality tool on special at 99 dollars reduced from 169.99 then there is good reason to consider laying out the extra twenty bucks.

Conversely, don't just stick to brand names, if you can find high quality tools that aren't brand names you might save a small fortune.
