How fast is DSL download speeds?

Mine is 70-90 KBS, which is pretty slow.... does anyone know how fsat its SUPPOSED to go? What's holding my speed back?

What does your provider SAY it is? You get what you pay for. In essence, your DSL line is like an ethernet wire connected to a hub using star topology. A DSL is simply another way to connect two points via wire. It is just that the hub your DSL link connects TO is at the main office of the phone company. What your computer indicates depends on what you are DOING with it and has nothing to do with the actual speed of communication over the DSL link. If it is going slower than what the phone company SAYS it is rated for, then YOUR computer is causing the slowdown. The DSL link speed is fixed and constant and does NOT change. Open the settings control in the DSL. Your DSL link speed is indicated THERE, and NOT on your computer in ANY way whatsoever. The DSL link speed is determined by the hardware installed at each end of the wire. In essence it is exactly like a telephone. The connection is made and maintained whether you are talking or NOT makes no difference. The same applies to the data. If you are not sending or receiving data, the open link still exists at the speed the provider says it is, whether you are actually sending data or not makes no difference. My connection says 256k up and 256k down. My network monitor measures bytes, not bits so I see 25k-35k speeds in my monitor information window, but only when data is moving, which is consistent .with my rated DSL speeds which is measured in bits. If I am sitting doing zip, my throughput drops to zero. Asymetrical DSL (ADSL) has a different rated speed up and down. My neighbor has 1m down and 64k up speeds. I opted for symmetric so I could run a file server which can effectively use the symmetric line. My neighbor gets files faster than I can, but serves files way slower.

EDIT: Regarding the person above me with a cable provider as a solution. BULL... Cable is a party line. You are competing with every other user on the cable wire for bandwidth. My neighbor has cable (same cost as my DSL for a 7mbit connection) and sees a huge slowdown of HIS connection every weekday when school lets out. His throughput drops to less than 10k bits per second! My connection STAYS at 256k bits per second no matter what time of day I am using my connection! Sure, on off peak hours, like 3 AM, his download speed IS faster than mine, but mine is constant regardless of the time of day or number of users at my ISP in the exact same manner as a hub distributes traffic through the hub. Cable IS a party line and the more users at any given moment, the slower everyone goes. DSL is always a constant, if slower than off-peak cable usage, speed of throughput! I prefer the consistent speed over the convenience of higher speed at off-peak hours.

Cable works well for off-peak, but it works poorly for peak use while DSL is constant no matter what time of the day it is used. Your throughput is ONLY related to the usage of your CPU, NOT the speed of your DSL connection.
