Fish Speed
If a 5 k/g fish swimming at a speed of 1 m/s swallows an absent-minded 1 kg fish swimming toward it at 4 m/s.?
The speed of the larger fish after lunch is _______ m/s.
This should actually be going in the physics section, but who cares? 
The principle at hand involves the conservation of momentum, that quantity of mass times velocity.
Thus, the larger fish has a momentum of 5 kg* 1 m/s= 5 kg-m/s. The smaller fish has a momentum of 1 kg* 4 m/s= 4 kg-m/s, but in the opposite direction.
Thus, when the larger fish swallows the smaller fish, the net momentum is 5-4= 1 kg-m/s. Please note that this momentum is for a velocity in the same direction the larger fish was going in the first place, pre-collision. Using positive and negative signs for velocity and momentum, dependent upon the direction traveled, may help illustrate this point better.
Finishing up, the new 6 kg mass of the larger fish with the smaller fish now in it's stomach has a momentum of 1 kg-m/s. Thus, using the momentum= mass* velocity, we find that 1 kg-m/s= 6 kg * x m/s can be solved using simple algebra. Thus, larger fish will be traveling at 1/6 m/s in the same direction he was traveling beforehand.
