The climate is much more than what you are getting wet. It's amazing how many writers overlook the weather as a useful tool both in the establishment and also tell the story.

Many years ago, we rely on time and took it seriously. The bad weather hit crops and livestock. Bad weather even affect health - either from starvation or disease.

Today we have supermarkets that will fly in food from around the world and central heating and air conditioned to ensure that what happens outside, no need to change the climate in our home.

But it's deeper than that. Seasons reflect aspects of life and the weather can be a great barometer (pun) for emotion.

In fact, everyone reacts slightly differently to the weather. Some love the heat and others despise it. Even taking into account these variations, most people react similarly to climatic conditions.

The The English language is full of idioms that reference the season or specific time. They need no explanation, we all understand exactly what you mean people when using a. That's because it is viewed as a subconscious level.

Even the most basic of descriptions of time to convey a mood:

Spring = hope, rebirth
Summer = adulthood, happiness
Fall = preparation for old age
Winter = Death
Sun = happiness, kindness
= Storm problems, a change
Calm before the storm = problem or a change ahead
Rainbow = hope, a link between two extremes (sun and rain)
Cloudy = confused, confusing, unclear
Clouds on the horizon of = trouble ahead
No wind = no change
Windy = changes
Weather bad = problems
= Fog confusion inadvertently
Rain = depression, evil
Snow = cold, clean

This has long an ideal tool to convey what is happening in history or head of a character.

You do not need to use the hammer approach, but also I caution for being too smart. Some references, subtle, fell into a scene in which the message across.

As an example, if you used the rain as a sign that something bad will happen, do not have the character of thought, "It's starting to rain and rain is a bad thing."

In contrast, reference to the light change - in brilliant shades of muted gray. You might even describe the rain, or the effect is like something intrinsically bad. The use of metaphors time and work well.

Mention the noise that brings rain; reference something that has to stop because the weather. Consider how inanimate objects react to the weather - or even how the characters change.

How does rain textures? How sound changes things? Does their own noise to drown something the person was listening? Does it simply everything stops spinning? Do you therefore take the silence?

How affects the senses of the character? Does it affect what they are doing? And to be subtle - affects your mood?

Remember that to build the mood, not kill the player in it. Sometimes a sudden change in mood is necessary and equally sudden change in climate is suitable, but it is likely that this is the exception to the rule.

Sometimes the change, or even the manner of change is as important as time itself.

Let the reader connect the dots. If you placed well enough, you get the picture. No need to go over them with a crayon to get the message.

Finally, never forget that creation is an integral part of writing a novel. However, the use of time is only one tool to set the scene - not the only one.
